When is an ALS ambulance the right choice?
We usually recommend an ALS ambulance for:
- Serious emergencies at home, such as a fall with injury, a seizure, or sudden weakness
- Patients with unstable blood pressure, heart rate or oxygen levels
- Transfers where the doctor wants continuous monitoring but not a ventilator
- Accident cases being moved to a trauma centre
- Patients with breathing difficulty who may need suction or a nebuliser on the way
If the patient is already on a ventilator, or the doctor expects breathing support may be needed, choose an ICU ambulance instead. If the patient is stable and only needs to be moved, a BLS ambulance or patient transport vehicle is usually enough.
What happens after you call

While it is on the way, keep the patient as comfortable as you can, gather their regular medicines and any recent reports, and keep the building entrance and lift clear.

When the crew arrives they take over monitoring and move the patient onto the stretcher. It also helps to call the hospital you are heading to, so the emergency team knows you are coming.
